Media statement on Rustenburg water shortages

The water shortages experienced by Rustenburg are a seasonal occurrence, often taking place when there is an increase in demand for water during the early summer months.

Rustenburg’s continuous growth has meant that there is a need for increased infrastructure capacity to meet the city’s growing water demands.

Rustenburg has upgraded their main waste water treatment works to supply treated water to the major platinum mines.

The city is also in the process of developing a scheme to draw water from the Hartbeespoort Dam which will supply treated water to the mines, and thereby taking the pressure off the Rand Water system.
