Rand Water Bursary scheme
Rand Water has two bursary schemes - the Children of Staff and Open bursary one.
Children of Staff Bursaries
Rand Water provides bursaries for tertiary studies to children of staff. The availability of these bursaries is viewed as a benefit of employment of the parent and receipt of these bursaries is subject to income tax in the hands of the employee parent. The bursary covers the cost of tuition, residential accommodation and text books for the duration of a first degree or diploma at a university of technology. Children who did not make it for a full bursary are awarded a half bursary which is valued at 50% of the full bursary. The bursaries are for children studying at South African recognised tertiary institutions which are Universities, University of Technologies and Colleges.
Child of staff bursaries are evaluated according to set criteria that evaluate academic performance, financial need and previously disadvantaged status, as applicable, in an objective, comparative manner. The bursaries are awarded based on a total weighted score. It is to be noted however that there is a separate category within these bursaries which focuses purely on academic results and does not consider the parent’s financial need or the child’s PDI status.

There is no restriction on the fields of study other than one of the fields which focuses on university of technology studies for fields relevant to Rand Water’s operations. Bursaries are available for first degrees and do not cover post-graduate studies. The children of Staff bursaries are
automatically renewed once the child has successfully completed their academic year and has been promoted to the next level.
Open Bursary Scheme
The aim of this scheme is to meet the needs of the organisation. The bursaries are awarded to persons from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. These bursaries have in the main been in engineering and scientific fields and carry an obligation for the recipient to work for Rand Water for a period on completion of their studies. Rand Water employs such bursars at its discretion, based on organisational requirements. These bursaries are open to all, including children of staff, who compete on the same basis as external applicants.
Bursaries are offered in fields which are relevant to Rand Water’s operational requirements and where there is a comparative scarcity of potential employees with appropriate tertiary qualifications. These fields are primarily the following, although others may apply from time to time: Engineering (Chemical, mechanical, electrical), Chemistry, Microbiology and Computer Science.
All divisions are approached each year to identify their future staffing needs that would require bursaries to be offered. This is to ensure an availability of competent tertiary education graduates who will fit competency, employment equity and staffing profile requirements. Potential bursars are sourced through advertisements and through use of a specialist service provider.
